Does Blue Buffalo cause diarrhea in dogs
Hi KGM801
Ive hear A LOT of people complaining about Blue Buffalo giving their dogs diarrhea. If you read through the Blue Buffalo thread on the review section there are tons of complaints, many have complained to Consumer Affairs as well and you can read those complains on the Consumer Affairs website. Last summer my friend got a new puppy and switched her from the food the breeder had her on (Science Diet) to Blue Buffalo and the dog got horrible diarrhea, she then tried another comparable food and the diarrhea cleared up overnight. So youre not alone! I think the company has some serious quality control issues, I know I lost my trust in the company after I got a bag of cat food covered with mold and dog biscuits with bugs in the bag
First off have you had the pup checked for worms, coccidia and giarrdia? If you havent do that.
Second this is a big decision because whichever I decide on will most likely be what I feed her for her whole life! PLEASE do not feed the same food for your dogs entire life! Feeding the same food for extended periods of time is so unhealthy. Pick at least two or three brands and rotate, dogs need variety. No single food can provide a living thing with all the nutrients they need.
Any 4/5 star food would be worth a try. I know Blue Buffalo runs about $50-$55 for the largest bag. Some 4/5 star foods in that price range that Id suggest checking out are: Earthborn, Merrick Grain-Free, Solid Gold Barking at the Moon, Natures Variety Instinct, Horizon Legacy, NutriSource Grain-Free and Horizon Pulsar.
If your pup is a large breed, however, there are other nutritional considerations and I would recommend picking a food off this list:

Adding some plain canned pumpkin and a probiotic supplement will help with the diarrhea. Good luck!
Is Blue Buffalo causing diarrhea?
#1I have a 4 month old German Shepherd and his previous vet told us that Blue Buffalo tends to cause diarrhea, he suggested Wellness, but his new vet says that Blue Buffalo is just fine. He was put on canned food for awhile to stop the diarrhea and the only thing he eats is Blue Buffalo, no treats or anything and he is still not solid. Is this being caused by the food? Would you suggest a new brand that is good for puppies?
#2I use wellness for large breeds and have no problems. Is your dog still on puppy food? If so you may consider starting regular food. Our VET had us change at three months, he said puppy food was to hot.
#3We feed Blue Buffalo exclusively and have not had problem for both our puppies and adult dogs.
#4Joker speaks the truth (that's my DH). We've been on Blue for almost 2 years now and haven't looked back. I do have a couple of questions. How long is awhile? Also when you switched to Blue how slowly/quickly did you transition? Added together those can both be factors. While what rickaz says may be good advice, be sure to talk to your own vet before you try feeding your puppy adult food. It's not formulated for puppies so you want a vet that knows YOUR dog to help you make that choice.
#5BB gave my puppy diarrhea, so we switched to TOTW. tried to give BB a 2nd chane Diarrhea returned. all dogs are different of course, but it was horrible for Cody.
#7my breeder used bb LBP, i kept Ryker on the pup formula for about 4 months then used 1/2 n 1/2 LB adult.. the peach bag/orange bag til about 7-8 months then switched over to LB Adult. he just turned a yr. old yesterday and has done excellent on it
#8Max has eaten BB since puppyhood and has done well on it (we did try other foods b/c he had itchies at one point and we wanted to rule out food allergies, also tried other foods to satisfy MR PICKYEATER!). I think after ruling out other factors (not switching food gradually, feeding too much) that sometimes a pup will simply do well on one food vs. another.
#9My pup has trouble with the foods and treats with too much flaxseed and/or chicory root. Wellness gave her diarrhea and so did the wellness treats. We feed her Holistic Select and she does great on it.
#10I think it's the same for humans too. Some people can eat fiber one cereal and bars and some cannot...LOLSo dogs tolerate different food ingredients differently too.
#11If your pup is on canned, soft food will equal softer poop. Have you tried adding a little white rice or dry food to the mix? Have you ruled out giardia? Our dog had really soft poop on Wellness, out of the many brands we've tried, the Solid Gold brand has worked best
#12I've been feeding my dog BB since she was a puppy. She too had diarrhea while on the BB puppy food. I tried everything...canned pumpkin, probiotics, adding some rice. But then someone told me to take her off the chicken formula and switch her to the BB Basics with Salmon and she has never had diarrhea again from her food. For my dog, it was the chicken formula that was giving her diarrhea. My dog loves the BB and is doing extremely well on it.
#17I had exactly the same experience with my Abby, while my current 6month old is just fine on the chicken formula.
#13I had switched my puppy to BB from Diamond (which the breeder was feeding, but can't find it anywhere near where I live). She is doing fairly well on BB. She has some soft stools, but not diarrhea. I was considering switching her to Solid Gold Wolf Cub when we are nearing the end of her current BB bag...but not sure if I should. Based on reviews it appears that Solid Gold Wolf Cub is the better food...but don't want to switch her AGAIN, if she's doing ok on BB. Any thoughts as to either keeping her on BB or switching? Is Wolf Cub a better food??
#16We switched Brutus from BB to Solid Gold Wolf Cub & not only does he love the taste but he is finally solid! I would say definitely switch to the Solid Gold it seems to be better food
#14BB Puppy seems to cause loose stools. Regular adult BB does not. Also, softer stools could be causes by overfeeding, so just check that out.
#15BB is great for my dogs, but I have had friends dogs who dont do well with it.
#19I use it for Kola she is 15 weeks... she does fine with it... Sometimes its just all the good stuff in it... it takes puppies time to adjust with it

Good food for dogs with diarrhea on Blue Buffalo
#1My new puppy, 16 weeks old, had an issue with diarrhea. There's a whole story to that in another thread
Anyway, in trying to reintroduce puppy food from the prescription canned food, he had another episode. Someone told me blue buffalo causes diarrhea in sensitive dogs. Anyone have a recommendation for something else to try? I want something I can pick up at a reasonable place. I don't want to have to order online, etc. I prefer dry dog food as well.
Thanks!
#2Has your dog had diarrhea on Blue Buffalo? The person made a pretty general statement- we feed Nyla Blue Buffalo Wilderness and have never had issues. She didn't do well on her old food and also with certain foods like peanut butter and eggs.
#3Rhea had diarrhea on Blue buffalo wilderness, so we switched her to Taste of the wild- salmon flavor. That helped immensely. She seemed to like it a bit more. We rotate both the dogs through the salmon formula and the wild boar. They do well on both, and haven't had any problems since switching them to it.
#4How did you re-introduce it? Were you going really really slowly? I assume he's doing ok on the prescription food, which one is it?(I know quite a few dogs on BB withh no diarrhea problems. Every dogs different, what works for one doesn't nessecarily work for another.)
#5So I didn't really explain it well. My pup started with a little diarrhea on the way to home from picking him up 2 hours away from a rescue, in a shelter setting. The diarrhea became progressively worse, he had some blood, etc. the rescue had given me a quart size ziploc bag of the food he'd been on to transition him. My other puppy has always had BB life protection formula, chicken and rice, so that's what we were transitioning to. We assumed he had something infectious, since he had a little on the way home, prior to me feeding him. That and the excessive diarrhea with blood and mucus! So he was treated with 2 different meds, and eventually started on canned food from the vet: Prescription Diet i/d. He got better. We had stool tests done, which were negative, but after the treatment had been given, so we aren't sure if it was really infected prior to treatment, or if it was something else. After a full week without diarrhea, I gave him about 1/3 cup BB with 1/2 can of the prescription diet yesterday morning. He had a slightly loose stool 1 hour later and had diarrhea in his crate again this morning. He apparently had another formed stool this afternoon. I haven't given him the BB since yesterday morning. I thought maybe it was best if I look for something that is generally better tolerated, if there IS something, as opposed to continuing to try to give him the same food... Not to knowing if it is the specific food or ANY regular food that will cause the problem. I realize all dogs are different, but I was hoping to tap into others' experiences for recommendations.
#6Ah!Once he's got solid poo again, add just a few pieces of the BB kibble to his food. Seriously, just a few, less than a 1/4cup few. If he still reacts to it then, then you may need a different food for him, but its entirely possible that he's just got a very sensitive tummy when it comes to food changes. If he doesn't get diarrhea then repeat that same few kibbles mixed in for a few more meals, and if he's still good then double the amount of kibble and reduce the canned food by about the same amount and repeat.
#7Try purina one smart blend sensitive systems. You can find it in petsmart.
#8Why suggest this? This is not something that would make anything better. it has corn gluten and other crap in it. Granted, there is less crap in it than other low quality foods, but not anything that would really be beneficial. If you're willing to spend the money, a higher quality food: ToTW, Orijen, etc. would be more beneficial than a lower quality, sub par food.
#10If the dog has the runs, then a rich food like orijen or TOTW will probably make the poops worse. What worked for my dogs is Holistic Selects Poultry flavor. The gal at the pet store said this would fix up the loose poop, and she was right. Worked like charm. This is after I tried all the "high quality" foods. (although the Holistic Select is considered very good quality too, but it is not as high in protein and fat.)
#11If you're looking for petsmart, around the price of blue. i would reccomend Wellness Core. very good food, probably the best petsmart has to offer in my opinion, aside from royal canin and perscription kibble, but anyways i think you should take a trip up there and check it out, if our puppy has any problems with her Fromm puppy food we are going to rotate to merrick and if all else fails wellness is the next on the list!goodluck!
#12Actually, I picked up Wellness Core. One of the other puppies in the litter apparently had an issue with diarrhea and some skin issues. His "Dad" started him on a grain free, organic food and he did well, so I looked for something similar that I could get at a local pet store and went with wellness Core. He's doing better. Although my vet is now telling me the food won't matter, she put him back on metronidazole as an anti diarrheal. Switching from the prescription food to wellness did not increase his diarrhea. He was having squishy formed to loose stool no matter which he was eating. Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I now have a list to work through if he doesn't tolerate the Wellness! He has gained 3.5 lbs in the first 3 weeks we've had him, and I can't see every rib anymore!
#13My Weezie couldn't handle the protein content in TOTW either so I switched her to LID Natural Balance. She has done great on it and it's perfect because they have treats in the same formula so there is no worries about issues when giving her treats.
#14I've had a very good experience with purina. my dog has been eating it for 9 years and has done great. It is my one year olds favorite. When I tried a high quality food Lily hated it and it had a recall.
