Its important to know about your pet food, including where it comes from. We looked into the pet food company, IAMS, to find out more about where they source ingredients and manufacture their products.

IAMS itself was founded in the 1940s by an animal nutritionist by the name of Paul Iams. The brand was at the forefront of developing dry dog food, thus replacing the standard table scrap meals that dogs were commonly fed.

The company has traded hands a few times, now landing under the ownership of Mars. Here, IAMS is joined by other brands, including Pedigree, Royal Canin, Nutro, Greenies, and more. But thats just the Pet Care category of the brands that Mars owns. Youll also recognize global names like Altoids, Dove, Juicy Fruit, M&Ms, and much more.

A global presence and leading pet food producer worldwide, IAMS has a stable seat in the pet nutrition business. Now, lets find out where all this kibble gets crafted.

Verdict: Is IAMS Pet Food Made in the USA?

All IAMS Pet Food is manufactured in the USA, but some ingredients are sourced globally.

On each product page, there is no obvious information about where the ingredients come from; they are simply listed by title. With no luck on the IAMS dog food and cat food product pages, we worked to look a bit deeper into the IAMS company policies.

Following the link to Supply Chain Transparency on the IAMS website, youre led to pages on the Mars website, which generally cover ingredients that may be sourced for any of their numerous brands. For example, Mars sources their beef ingredients from Latin America. See below:

The beef ingredients that Mars uses for its brands are sourced from locations such as Brazil, Argentina, and Mexico. Soy is sourced from Brazil. Wild-caught fish come from water regions around Asia Pacific and Europe.

We sent an inquiry to customer service to ask specifically about the pet foods from IAMS. Here is the response we received:

Pet foods are manufactured in the many US facilities that Mars operates. Though the effort is made to source ingredients close to those factories, global materials are used regardless. The customer service representative that responded to our email did clarify that no meat-based ingredients are bought from China.

On the back label of the pet food cans, you can see a Distributed By.. section. Taking a look below, you can see this IAMS food can states that it is distributed by Mars Petcare US, based out of Franklin, TN. But does that also tell us that the food is manufactured in the US? The regulations for human food state that a can must be labeled with the country of origin if the product was not made in the US. Does this rule also apply to pet food?

We started a chat with the IAMS team to ask for verification of the manufacturing location. Here is that conversation:

Iams () is an American brand of dog food and cat food manufactured by Spectrum Brands in Europe and Mars, Incorporated worldwide. The food is formulated for the puppy/kitten, adult and mature stages of life. Veterinary formulas for pets with special dietary requirements are also produced.^[1]

According to Iams, since 2006, studies have been conducted in pet owners' homes, P&G Pet Care's Pet Health & Nutrition Center and locations where dogs and cats are already living such as assistance dog organizations.^[2][3]

During the 1940s, because pet food was not available in stores, animals were predominantly fed homemade food, usually table scraps.^[4] Paul Iams, an animal nutritionist who graduated from The Ohio State University in 1937, founded the Iams Company in 1946 in a small feed mill near Dayton, Ohio.^[5] In 1950, he developed the world's first animal-based protein dry dog food and called it Iams 999.^[1][6] In 1969, Paul Iams wanted to differentiate the new formula from other Iams products. Iams chose to name this new formula "Eukanuba", a term originated by jazz era personality Hoagy Carmichael, meaning "the tops" or "something supreme".^{[dubious discuss]}

In 1973 during the Arab oil embargo, the costs for meat and bone meal tripled. Sale prices in the U.S. were frozen by a nationwide wage and price control was issued by ex-president Richard Nixon.^[7] Iams did not change the product formula during the price-freeze mandate and the company nearly went bankrupt.^[4] Clay Mathile, who had joined Iams in 1970, purchased half of the company in 1975.^[8] By 1982, he became its sole owner and president.^[9] After expanding the company from $100,000 revenue in 1970 to $900million in 1999, Mathile sold it to Procter & Gamble (P&G) in September 1999.^[5][10] In July 2006, P&G reorganized the Pet Health & Nutrition division into P&G Pet Care (consisting of the Iams and Eukanuba brands).

In its largest divestiture in five years, Procter & Gamble announced in April 2014 that it would sell its Iams, Eukanuba and Natura pet-food brands in all markets except Europe to Mars, Incorporated for $2.9billion in cash. P&G said that the deal would allow it to lose a slow performer and generate cash to grow core businesses.^[11] The deal for P&G Pet Care's operations in North America and Latin America was completed in August 2014. Mars, Inc. also exercised options to acquire P&G's pet-food business in some parts of Asia Pacific, Middle East and Africa, including Australia, Japan and Singapore.^[12][13] P&G sold its European pet-care business to Spectrum Brands in December 2014.^[14]

Who Makes Iams?

By-product meal can mean anything from organ meats (which are good) to feather parts (which arent all that okay). There also seems to be more sources of grains here than sources of protein. Overall, however, this formula combines a balanced diet with an affordable price tag.

The fresh chicken and vegetables are the main ingredients that offer good nutritional quality but they are offset by the by-products and cornstarch.

What we dont love so much is the use of common allergen ingredients such as corn and gluten for a puppys meal. Coming at the heels of the grains is dried plain beet pulp. These are either compressed pellets or dried flakes that is whats left after sugar is extracted from sugar beets.

They are excellent for bulking up a dogs stool (to lessen the risk of them becoming watery), providing energy, and promoting colon health. Because theyre easily digestible, they are often added to dog foods for the fiber content.

Iams included supplemental vitamins into the mixture to ensure that a dogs daily nutrition needs are reached. Aside from the usual vitamins and minerals, there is also DHA for healthy retinal and neuro functions, allergy relief, and fighting off inflammation.

This formulation offers a healthy balanced meal for seniors. The inclusion of L-carnitine is a good idea, because it helps with fat metabolism and can help reduce weight in chunky dogs. Overall, we like this mature dog recipe and will recommend it.

Iams Dog Food Recalls History

The Iams brand states that quality is at the core of our business on their website, noting that they use only high-quality ingredients and that they do not cut corners. The Iams website states that the Iams company adheres to incredibly high standards for quality and safety both in the formulas they design and the ingredients they use.

Every bag of Iams pet food is subjected to more than 120 quality assurance tests before hitting pet store shelves. This being the case, you might expect to find few recalls in Iams history.

Unfortunately, the opposite is true Iams has been affected by quite a few recalls over the past decade or so, though half of them were for cat products rather than dog products. Here are the details for recalls occurring in the last 10 years:

• In August 2013, the FDA issued a recall for certain lots of Iams dry dog foods including Healthy Naturals Weight Control Adult, Healthy Naturals Chicken Adult, Premium Protection Chicken Adult, ProActive Health Small Breed, ProActive Health Large Breed, and ProActive Health Large Chunks due to potential salmonella contamination.
• In March 2013, the Iams company issued a voluntary recall for Iams Shakeables Dog Treats due to potential mold growth.
• In December 2011, the FDA issued a recall for Iams ProActive Health Smart Puppy dry food due to potential aflatoxin contamination.
• In August 2010, the FDA issued a recall for Iams Indoor Care Weight Control with Hairball Care dry cat food due to potential salmonella contamination.
• In July 2010, the FDA issued a recall for Iams Veterinary Formulas Feline Renal recipe due to potential salmonella contamination.
• In June 2010, the FDA issued a recall for Iams ProActive Health canned cat and kitten food due to low levels of thiamine.
