Why does my cat act like its starving
Why Does My Cat Always Act Like Theyre Starving?
Oh, our cats have us so well-trained, dont they?
We all know how this goes: you feed your cat and they pretend that you havent. Daily life is spent wondering if you did just in fact feed your cat. Signs are even made to let others in the house know that the cat has been fed. They display their disapproval with cattitude-like looks glared dead center in your direction.
Or youre sleeping, like dead asleep sleeping, and they sit on you meowing loudly to get up and feed them. BUT, theres food in their bowl. Youre half asleep, scratching your head, shuffling back to bed. But not after youve given them more food, of course.
Our cats are our master manipulators. And not only this, they train us to feed them when they want.
I personally do not overfeed my cats, and although they might think Im evil for doing so, its in their best interest for me to ration their food intake in order to keep them at a healthy weight.
So, why do people often overfeed their cats? Well, because many cats will pretend as if theyre starving when theyre really not.
Cats seem to train us to feed them regularly at their demands for a few reasons. Your cat is all about cleanliness, and theyre all about freshness, too. If that food has been sitting out, your finicky cat might not want to eat it simply because its not fresh enough for their high standards.
There are a few more other reasons, though, for your cats demand for food. Think about the bowl that you are using to feed them, and now consider your cats whiskers which are embedded 4x as deep as their fur. These wispy receptors on their face are highly sensitive to touch, and your cat wont want to shove their face deep to get food out and risk the discomfort. Cats are the connoisseurs of comfort, remember?
Additionally, your cat could be demanding more food if youve held out on the good stuff, such as a canned topping that goes on their dry cat food. Cats are smart, and they arent shy about asking for what they want. Or meowing loudly for it.
But, I will say, although we do not have a cute obsession with fat humans, many of us have an obsession with fat cats. The more to love, some might think. But with feline obesity steadily on the rise, overfeeding your cat is actually doing more harm than good. So, dont give in to the temptation. Make kitty work for those treats. That way, the two of you will have more time on this earth together.

Why Is My Cat Always Hungry?
Cats are typically grazers that eat small amounts throughout their waking hours during the day. Some cats never seem to be satisfied, no matter how much food you give them or how often they are fed. This can happen for many reasons, from simple boredom to concerning medical conditions.
8 Reasons for Increased Appetite in Cats
Here are some reasons why your cat may seem like theyre always hungry, as well as how each case is treated and when to go to the vet:
Boredom
Some cats will meow for food or eat simply because they are bored. To help relieve boredom, you can make their environment more enriching. Adding some interactive toys, including toys that allow your cat to hunt or search for their food, can help break the begging habit.
Low-Quality Diet
Poor-quality foods or not feeding your cat a diet that provides adequate calories to maintain their activity levels throughout the day can also lead to hunger pangs.
Feed a well-balanced, feline-formulated diet based on your cats lifestyle. For example, kittens and active cats require more calories, while sedentary, middle-aged cats require fewer calories. Discuss a diet plan with your veterinarian to determine the best diet and daily caloric intake to support a healthy life for your cat.
Aging and Changes in Metabolism
As cats age, their metabolism changes, and their bodies lose muscle mass. Your feline may be feeling hungrier to keep up with these changes. Your veterinarian can help determine the amount of fats, proteins, amino acids, and carbohydrates your cat should ingest daily to help lessen the cries for more food.
Medication Side Effects
Certain medications, such as corticosteroids like prednisolone and appetite stimulants like mirtazapine or capromorelin cause an increase in hunger. Your veterinarian will discuss these possible side effects when prescribing new medications. Vets will sometimes prescribe these medications to increase the appetite in some cats with appetite issues.
Intestinal Parasites
Severe parasitic infections or certain types of parasites (specifically roundworms and tapeworms) can cause increased hunger in cats. The parasites steal a large amount of the calories that your cat is ingesting, causing weight loss and hunger even when they are fed frequent, high-caloric meals.
Your veterinarian can do fecal testing and give your cat appropriate deworming medications to help rid their body of these intestinal parasites.
Hyperthyroidism
Hyperthyroidism is caused by overproduction of thyroid hormone from a cats thyroid gland. A normal thyroid produces this hormone to maintain normal metabolism in the body. With hyperthyroidism, a cats metabolism increases due to excessive hormone levels.
Increased metabolism leads to weight loss, muscle wasting, and often a severely increased appetite. This condition also commonly causes increased thirst, urination, and vomiting. Vets diagnose hyperthyroidism via physical examination and blood testing.
This disease can be treated either with medication to slow thyroid hormone production (methimazole) or radioactive iodine (I-131) therapy if your veterinarian determines your cat is a good candidate. Surgical thyroidectomy is rarely performed, due to the issue of hypothyroidism and hypoparathyroidism once the gland is removed.
Diabetes Mellitus
This is a disease where a cat does not have enough insulin (type I diabetes) in their body or does not respond to the insulin that is circulating in their body (type II diabetes).
Both types of diabetes in cats prevent the body from breaking down glucose (the bodys sugar source) into usable energy, causing excessive amounts of sugar in the bloodstream. This leads to your cat feel hungry even with hyperglycemia (high blood glucose).
Along with increased hunger, you are likely to see other clinical signs such as weight loss, a dull hair coat, increased thirst, and urination, and in severe cases, vomiting, diarrhea, and listlessness. Your vet can give a diagnosis via blood glucose testing and urine testing.
Insulin therapy (Glargine, ProZinc) is necessary for cats with diabetes and is usually needed for a lifetime. Diet changes (Royal Canin Glycobalance, Purina DM, Hills m/d) can also be helpful to stabilize blood sugar and hunger levels.
Malabsorptive Diseases
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) or intestinal neoplasia can cause the small intestines to not properly absorb nutrients from the food your cat ingests. This leads to weight loss, muscle wasting, and often, increased appetite. These signs are frequently seen alongside vomiting, diarrhea, and pica (eating non-food items).
Rarely, cats can be diagnosed with exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI), a condition where the pancreas does not produce the appropriate amount of enzymes to help break down food. This thwarts the bodys ability to absorb the foods nutrients.
Bloodwork, urine testing, and abdominal imaging are often needed to diagnose small intestinal malabsorption diseases. Treatment depends on the diagnosis. Diet changes to easily digestible, often hypoallergenic/novel protein diets, probiotics, vitamin B12 (cobalamin), and sometimes oral steroids, chemotherapy, and/or the addition of digestive enzymes are usually recommended help with hunger issues.
Should You Go to the Vet if Your Cat Is Always Hungry?
If you notice that you cat is persistently hungry (over 5-7 days), or you see these other signs, then it is very important to schedule a visit to the veterinarian:
How Vets Find the Cause for Increased Appetite in Cats
Testing may include:
- Full bloodwork and urine testing to assess liver, kidney, thyroid, electrolyte, and red and white blood cell levels
- Fecal testing for intestinal parasites
- Abdominal imaging such as x-rays or ultrasound to look at the gastrointestinal system.
Sometimes, a specific blood test called a gastrointestinal panel is recommended, which helps further inspect for small intestinal malabsorptive diseases.

Habit Cats are creatures of habit and once they learn that mealtimes come with a reward of food, they may start to beg for food in anticipation. This is especially true if your cat has been rewarded with food in the past when theyve asked for it.
Hunger Its also possible that your cat is genuinely hungry and is looking for a way to get more food. This can be especially true if your cat is not getting enough food during their regular mealtimes.

If its habit, then try to break the cycle by rewarding your cat for good behavior instead of feeding them when they beg.
If your cat is genuinely hungry, then its time to evaluate their diet. Make sure your cat is getting enough food during mealtimes and that the food youre providing is high quality and nutritionally balanced. If your cat is still hungry after mealtimes, then try adding some high-calorie treats to their diet.

Do you ever wonder why your cat looks at you while it eats? Many cats will stare at you while theyre eating, and this is often seen as a sign of affection. But theres also a more practical reason why cats want you to watch them while they eat they feel more secure.
When a cat feels secure, its more likely to eat without feeling threatened or stressed. The presence of a human can help provide this feeling of security. Cats are extremely sensitive to their environment, and if they dont feel safe, they wont be willing to eat.
Cats need their space
Cats are solitary creatures, and they dont like it when you hover around them while they eat. While it might not be a major fear for them, they might just feel more comfortable with you watching from a distance. One way to make these cats feel more comfortable is by giving them room to check out their surroundings instead of having to face the wall.
If youre in the same room as your cat while its eating, try not to make sudden movements or loud noises that could startle it. Cats dont like to be surprised, and this can make them feel threatened and less likely to eat.
Different cats, different needs
Not all cats are the same, and some might actually prefer to eat without being watched. If your cat seems nervous or uncomfortable with you watching, try leaving the room and see if that helps. You can also try feeding your cat in a different room or area of the house, where it can feel more secure.
If your cat still doesnt want to eat, it could be a sign of an underlying medical condition or stress. If this is the case, its best to take your cat to the vet for a check-up.
Making eating time a pleasant experience
Its important to make sure that eating time is a pleasant experience for your cat. This means providing food thats fresh and nutritious, and also making sure that your cat has access to a clean litter tray and plenty of water.
You should also avoid putting your cats food in the same place every day. Cats like to explore, and if theyre always eating in the same spot, they wont have the opportunity to do so. Try putting their food in different places around the house to give them the chance to explore and feel more comfortable.
Cats like to feel secure
At the end of the day, cats want to feel safe and secure when theyre eating. This means providing them with a quiet, peaceful environment and avoiding any sudden movements or loud noises.
